At Ferndale Primary School and Nursery, we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme.

We are on an exciting journey to continually develop our playtimes so that every child has access to rich, meaningful and enjoyable play experiences each day. For us, play is not just a break from learning—it is a vital part of how children grow, explore and make sense of the world.

Through OPAL, we are creating an environment where children are encouraged to be imaginative, take appropriate risks, build friendships and develop independence. Our outdoor spaces are evolving to reflect the interests and needs of our children, making playtimes something they truly look forward to.

At Ferndale, we want every child to flourish—not only academically, but socially, emotionally and physically. We know that positive play experiences have a lasting impact on wellbeing, confidence and happiness, and we place great value on this within our school day.

Our Play Policy reflects our commitment to inclusive, creative and child-led play for all.

We are incredibly proud of the joy and energy that OPAL brings to our school…
