Subject Vision (Intent, Implementation, Impact):

At Ferndale our intention is that we develop children who have a positive attitude to Mathematics and a deeper understanding of Mathematical concepts through a process of enquiry, reasoning and problem solving. We develop a confidence in mathematics where children can express ideas fluently and talk about the subject using mathematical language. To achieve this, we implement a mastery approach curriculum where we provide carefully crafted lessons and resources to foster deep conceptual and procedural knowledge. The impact of our curriculum is that all pupils are capable of achieving a high standard in mathematics.

How Maths in taught

At Ferndale Primary and Nursery School our intent is that all children have the opportunities to achieve and understand Mathematical skills and concepts.

We teach the learning objectives set out in the National Curriculum and we use this document and learning documents from the White Rose Mathematics learning hub to plan our units of work. Some lesson objectives last for a couple of lessons and some may be studied for a week.

Our learning journey for each objective will follow different stages and timings for children to ensure they have the opportunities to meet these objectives. Our staff will adapt their teaching and activities to support and challenge children during each lesson.

For each objective we teach every child how to answer questions that meet the objective. At Ferndale school we call these Key Skills.

Children then develop an essential deeper understanding of the objective by solving problems, applying their understanding and reasoning their answers. We call this Securing Skills.

For children to be working at the expected level for their year group we ensure that they have achieved Key skills and Securing skills during the year.

A small group of children will have a greater depth of understanding of the year group objectives. These children will be set further challenging tasks which we call Mastery
